Learn how to jumpstart your vehicle’s battery with support from our team.

Prepare Your Vehicle

Position the donor car close enough to the front of the vehicle with the dead battery that the cables can reach. Shut both vehicles off and open the hoods. Then locate the battery terminals and make sure they are free from corrosion or damage.

Attach the Red Cables

You’ll start by attaching the red jumper cables first. Place the clamp on the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery. Then attach the clamp to the positive terminal on the donor battery.

Attach the Black Cables

Next, you’ll attach the black cables, starting with the donor vehicle. Attach the black clamp to the negative (-) terminal of the donor vehicle battery. On the vehicle with the dead battery, locate a section of unpainted metal, like a bolt, and attach the remaining clamp.

Start the Vehicles

Start the donor vehicle and allow the engine to run for a few minutes. If the vehicle’s battery has only been dead for a short time, it might start right up. Otherwise, you’ll need to allow the power to flow for a little longer before attempting to turn the dead battery over. If it doesn’t work the first time, allow the car to charge longer before trying again. Once your car starts, let it run for at least 10-15 minutes, including driving — perhaps, bringing it into our service center for a battery exam.
